With Uganda’s national elections just days away, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have ramped up security measures in Kampala and other major towns. This move is in response to long-standing concerns about electoral tensions and aims to maintain public order during the final week before the January 15 presidential and parliamentary elections. Heavily armed UPDF troops have been deployed across the capital city, Kampala, as well as other urban areas like Mbale, Jinja, Arua, Gulu, and Kasese. The increased military presence includes the use of armored personnel carriers to safeguard voters, protect public property, and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
UPDF and Police Collaboration to Ensure Election Safety
Colonel Chris Magezi, the acting UPDF spokesperson, reassured the public that the heightened military presence should not cause alarm. He emphasized that the UPDF is working closely with the Uganda Police Force to prevent any potential violence or threats posed by political actors or their supporters.
Magezi explained, “Cases of criminality or threats to public order will be dealt with promptly and in compliance with the laws of Uganda.” The coordinated efforts between the UPDF and police are designed to ensure that the elections are conducted smoothly and without disruptions.
Electoral Context and Political Climate
The upcoming elections, set to take place on January 15, 2026, will see Ugandans casting their votes for various positions, including the presidency, parliamentary seats, and local council roles. President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, is seeking another term, facing strong competition from opposition leaders like Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
As election day approaches, the increased military presence reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining security and public order in a politically charged environment. Tensions between opposition groups and the ruling party have been high in the lead-up to the elections, making the role of security forces crucial in ensuring a peaceful and fair process.
