The Uganda People’s Defence Forces is mourning the loss of one of its senior commanders following the death of Maj. Gen. Francis Takirwa, the deputy commander of land forces, in a development that has sent shockwaves through military circles. The UPDF deputy death was confirmed on Saturday by security sources, with an official army statement expected to follow.

Maj. Gen. Takirwa, a long-serving officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, reportedly died after a period of illness. While details surrounding the cause of death remain undisclosed, colleagues described the news as a major loss to the institution.

UPDF deputy death marks end of decades-long service

Born in 1965 in Mbarara District, western Uganda, Takirwa joined the army in 1989 and steadily rose through the ranks over more than three decades of service. The UPDF deputy death closes a chapter on a career defined by command experience, professional training, and regional security operations.

Before his most recent appointment, Takirwa commanded the UPDF’s Second Division headquartered in Mbarara. He also previously served as the army’s chief of education, sports, and culture, roles that placed him at the center of officer training and institutional development.

Regional deployment and international training

Takirwa was part of Uganda’s military contingent deployed to Somalia between 2011 and 2012 under the African Union Mission in Somalia, a regional effort aimed at countering al Shabaab and stabilising the Horn of Africa. His participation in the mission contributed to Uganda’s long-standing involvement in regional peacekeeping operations.

Throughout his career, he undertook multiple professional military courses in Uganda and abroad, including training in Tanzania, China, Egypt, and South Africa. Fellow officers often cited his discipline and professionalism as defining traits.

UPDF deputy death leaves unanswered questions

As tributes continue to emerge, the army is expected to release further information regarding funeral arrangements and the official cause of death. The UPDF deputy death comes at a time when the military leadership remains closely involved in both domestic security and regional operations.

Maj. Gen. Takirwa is remembered by colleagues as a dedicated officer whose service spanned some of the most transformative years of Uganda’s military history.
