The chairperson of Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, H.E Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa, has taken a defiant stance regarding his battle with the LGBTQ community. He recently enacted the Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023, which outlaws LGBTQ rights. Speaking to party members at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi district, Museveni emphasized that he will not back down and plans to confront the West using a revolutionary approach.

Since the law was signed on May 29th, Uganda has faced significant international criticism from donor partners and multinational organizations. These entities have threatened to sever ties with Kampala if the government does not repeal the law. The United States and several Western countries, which contribute over 50% of funds to Uganda’s national budget, have condemned the law, citing its violation of minority rights.

Despite the pressure, Museveni has urged his lawmakers to prepare for a confrontation with the West. He emphasized that the NRM has always stood by its principles and will not waver. Some activists have already challenged the law in the Constitutional Court, seeking its nullification. However, Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa has announced his intention to join the case as an amicus curiae (friend of the court) to defend the law.
