Strong Growth Driven by Diaspora Earnings
Uganda’s remittance inflows are projected to reach $1.96 billion (about Shs7.45 trillion) by 2030. This growth is fueled by steady earnings from Ugandans working abroad and the rapid expansion of digital money transfer systems. The findings come from Statista, which compiles data from over 22,500 global sources.
Statista reports that remittances rose to $1.64 billion (around Shs6.23 trillion) in 2025. The increase reflects a sustained recovery in global employment and continued growth in Uganda’s external inflows.
Recent Trends Show Rising Momentum
The Bank of Uganda recently confirmed that remittances climbed to $1.6 billion in the 12 months leading to 2025—an increase of 14% from the previous year.
According to the Statista report, inflows have grown largely due to stronger contributions from Ugandans in North America, Europe, and the Middle East. The report notes that the resilience of the diaspora has become a major economic anchor for the country.
Why Remittances Matter
Statista emphasizes that remittances play a critical role in household welfare. Many families use the money for education, healthcare, and day-to-day needs. Additionally, these inflows help stabilize Uganda’s external position and support the value of the shilling.
Digital Transfers Accelerate Growth
The increase in remittances is also driven by the growth of digital and cross-border financial services. Telecom operators have expanded their platforms to meet rising demand for faster and more affordable transfers.
During the launch of Airtel Money’s new cross-border service integrated with Juba Express, Managing Director Japeth Aritio highlighted the urgency of seamless international transfers.
“In an interconnected world, cross-border transactions remain essential,” he said. “Parents paying school fees, families supporting loved ones, and businesses making critical payments all depend on efficient money transfers.”
Expanding Access Through Partnerships
Aritio added that partnering with Juba Express allows Airtel Money to extend its services beyond Uganda, making transfers safer and cheaper.
Juba Express representative Sitati Dawo said the collaboration strengthens financial access for Ugandans globally. “Our goal has always been to connect communities through affordable and efficient transfers,” he noted. He added that the partnership empowers millions to support families, run businesses, and access new opportunities with confidence.
Uganda Strengthens Its Regional Position
Airtel Money stated that integrating Juba Express into its platform further reinforces Uganda’s role as a regional leader in digital financial services. The partnership ensures more Ugandans can engage in the global economy, regardless of where they live.
