UPDF Spokesperson Urges Vigilance to Prevent Fraud
Kampala, Uganda – In recent days, social media platforms in Uganda, notably Facebook and Twitter, have been flooded with information regarding the recruitment of individuals into the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). However, UPDF spokesperson Mr. Felix Kulayigye has categorically dismissed these social media posts, cautioning the public against fake recruitment announcements circulating online.
According to Mr. Kulayigye, the UPDF is not currently conducting any recruitment exercises, and the posts providing links to purported recruitment portals are misleading and deceptive. He emphasized that the UPDF follows specific official channels to announce recruitment opportunities, which include advertising in newspapers, radio, and television stations, and through their official website (www.updf.go.ug) and Twitter handle (@updfspokesperson). Importantly, he clarified that the UPDF never provides links for filling out personal data online.
“These deceptive posts fall under the category of phishing crimes, aimed at stealing personal information,” Mr. Kulayigye stated in a press release issued on September 4. He further advised Ugandans to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of information they come across on social media before sharing sensitive personal information, such as login credentials, credit card details, phone numbers, and account numbers.
Highlighting the UPDF’s commitment to information security, Mr. Kulayigye urged the general public to remain vigilant to prevent falling victim to fraud and to treat these fake posts with the utmost contempt they deserve. He reiterated the official stance of the UPDF, emphasizing that recruitment processes will be announced exclusively through established channels.
“When the recruitment process is ready to commence, we will officially announce it through the channels mentioned above,” Mr. Kulayigye assured.
The warning from the UPDF serves as a timely reminder for Ugandans to exercise caution and discernment when encountering information on social media platforms. It underscores the importance of relying on official sources for updates on government activities, particularly in matters as significant as national defense and recruitment.
As the UPDF continues its efforts to safeguard the security and well-being of Uganda, citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and informed through trusted sources to protect themselves from potential online scams and fraudulent activities.
