Uganda has made history by successfully treating its first patient using advanced stem cell therapy. This marks a significant milestone in East Africa’s medical journey. The treatment showcases Uganda’s dedication to innovation and progress in healthcare.

Stem cell therapy, also known as regenerative medicine, focuses on repairing damaged, diseased, or dysfunctional tissues. It uses stem cells or their derivatives to promote healing. A team from the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC), working alongside Asea BioTherapeutics (ABT), performed the procedure. Additionally, this event celebrated the public opening of their state-of-the-art regenerative medicine center.

On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, the first procedure took place and was highly successful. Dr. Hon. Elly Karuhanga became the first patient to undergo the treatment at the new facility. His experience highlights how advanced cellular therapies can transform health and well-being.

Dr. Cissy Kityo, Executive Director of JCRC, explained that regenerative medicine has the potential to change treatment approaches for chronic conditions. “At JCRC-ABT, we are committed to improving lives through innovative healthcare solutions,” she said. Furthermore, she noted that their program is based on years of research, ensuring safe and effective treatments for patients. This achievement represents just the beginning of a new era in personalized medicine.
