Uganda Airlines Gatwick flights are now a reality, marking a new chapter in international air travel between Uganda and the United Kingdom. The national carrier officially launched its first direct service to London’s Gatwick International Airport, providing a fast and convenient connection between Entebbe and London.
Flight Schedule and Aircraft Details
The new non-stop service operates four times a week—on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The route uses the advanced Airbus A330-800neo, configured to serve a wide range of passengers with:
- 20 Business Class seats
- 28 Premium Economy seats
- 210 Economy Class seats
The journey takes approximately nine hours, cutting down transit times for passengers who previously had to connect through other hubs.
Gatwick Airport’s Strategic Expansion
Jonathan Pollard, Chief Commercial Officer at Gatwick Airport, celebrated the route as a vital addition to the airport’s growing African network:
“This is our 16th route to Africa, including nine long-haul services. The African market has played a vital role in our recovery post-COVID and continues to be a real springboard.”
He also highlighted the UK-Uganda travel market, valued at over £600 million in 2024, with £500 million from outbound UK travel alone. This new connection is expected to significantly boost those numbers.
Gatwick forecasts that its capacity to Africa in 2025 will surpass pre-pandemic levels by 55%, reinforcing the importance of the Uganda route.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
British High Commissioner to Uganda Lisa Chesney, who was among the first passengers on the inaugural flight, welcomed the launch with enthusiasm:
“It’s a privilege to be on the first flight. The timing is perfect, and we’re excited about the opportunities it brings.”
The direct flights are seen as a catalyst for trade, tourism, and investment, making travel easier for business professionals, tourists, and members of the Ugandan diaspora.
Economic and Cultural Impact
Officials from both Uganda and the UK expect these flights to:
- Improve business connectivity
- Attract foreign investment
- Facilitate tourism and cultural exchange
- Support the Ugandan diaspora in maintaining closer ties with home
Uganda Airlines’ CEO and Gatwick authorities emphasized the role this direct link plays in building stronger economic bridges.
A Win for Travelers
Passengers now enjoy:
- Reduced travel time
- No layovers in other countries
- Enhanced onboard comfort via the modern A330-800neo
- Better cargo and freight capacity for business shipments
For frequent flyers, this development offers increased convenience, reliability, and a more seamless travel experience.
