The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has issued a strong warning to political agents, urging them to refrain from displaying campaign posters and flags on electricity power lines and related infrastructure. This warning comes amidst concerns over safety risks and potential power disruptions during the pre-election period.
Rising Incidents of Power Line Interference
UEDCL’s warning follows a notable increase in videos and images circulating on social media, showing political agents placing national flags and campaign materials on electricity wires, utility poles, and transformers. UEDCL stated that this practice not only endangers those involved but also jeopardizes the safety of the public and the reliability of power distribution.
Jonan Kiiza, UEDCL’s Head of Corporate and Stakeholder Affairs, emphasized that these actions could lead to serious consequences, including power blackouts and electrocution. “These acts are extremely dangerous not only to those hanging or placing them but to the entire community because they can cause unwarranted power blackouts and cause personal harm or electrocution to anyone who gets in close contact with the energized lines,” Kiiza stated.
Violation of the Electricity Act
The company also highlighted that hanging materials near high-voltage power lines violates Section 87(1) of the Electricity Act, 2022, as amended. This regulation aims to protect electricity infrastructure and prevent accidents. UEDCL further warned that such violations not only put lives at risk but also cause unplanned power outages, which could have significant consequences for the entire community.
Call for Public Awareness and Electoral Commission’s Support
In addition to urging political agents to desist from interfering with power infrastructure, UEDCL called on the Electoral Commission and political leaders to actively discourage this dangerous practice. The company also advised the public to stay away from power lines, particularly during the busy election period, as these areas are critical to maintaining a stable power supply.
UEDCL reiterated that the safety of the public and the protection of critical electricity infrastructure remain top priorities. The company cautioned that any actions that disrupt power lines or transformers could have far-reaching consequences, especially in a time of heightened political activity.
Ensuring Safety During Election Season
As Uganda enters the election season, UEDCL’s message serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting public infrastructure and prioritizing safety. The company’s commitment to maintaining stable power supply and protecting citizens from harm underscores the need for responsibility and awareness during these politically charged times.
