Prominent Ugandan actor, playwright, and former Member of Parliament, Kato Lubwama, has tragically passed away. The news of Lubwama’s demise was initially shared by Andrew Mukasa, a well-known business associate and events promoter who goes by the name Bajjo Events. According to reports, Lubwama succumbed to complications arising from his longstanding heart condition on June 7. The sad event took place at Stana Medical Centre in Bunamwaya, where Lubwama had been receiving medical care.
Kato Lubwama rose to prominence in the 1990s as a talented actor and playwright. He played a pivotal role in reviving the art of theater in Uganda through his establishment of Diamonds Ensemble, which, along with other theater companies, breathed new life into the industry. However, as interest in theater began to decline in the 2000s, Lubwama successfully transitioned to the emerging medium of FM radio. His presence on CBS FM’s Kalisoliso program brought him widespread recognition and fame. Collaborating with fellow actors Abby Mukiibi and Patricko Mujjuka, Lubwama’s morning show gained immense popularity, becoming one of the most listened-to programs in Uganda. Known by his stage name, Bisso, Lubwama became a household name and charmed audiences with his wit and humor.
In a surprising turn of events, Lubwama made a career switch to politics and won the seat for Rubaga South Member of Parliament in 2016. However, his tenure in politics was marked by controversy. Lubwama infamously declared that his primary motivation for entering parliament was to serve his own business interests, rather than prioritizing the needs of his constituents. This candid statement, “I came to eat,” drew criticism and raised questions about his commitment to public service. Ultimately, Lubwama lost his parliamentary seat in 2021.
Following his exit from politics, Lubwama focused on reestablishing himself in the entertainment industry. He founded B24 TV, created a YouTube channel, and made regular appearances on various digital platforms. Notably, he captivated audiences with his appearances on popular shows such as NBS TV’s UnKut and Kasuku. Unapologetically defending his limited record in parliament, Lubwama attributed the end of his political career to the alleged falsehoods spread by his rivals in the National Unity Platform, led by fellow artist Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. Despite the criticism he faced, Lubwama remained steadfast, expressing that he didn’t miss parliament as it provided him with an opportunity to focus on his private business ventures, including his involvement in maize flour trading.
Tragically, Lubwama passed away at the age of 52. Born on August 16, 1970, he had a twin brother named Isaac Wasswa, who had previously passed away. Lubwama’s death marks the end of a remarkable and diverse career that left an indelible impact on Uganda’s entertainment industry. As a talented actor, influential radio personality, and unconventional politician, Lubwama’s legacy will continue to be remembered by those whose lives he touched through his artistic endeavors and public service.
