The United States Embassy in Kampala City has issued a travel advisory, urging American citizens to reconsider their plans to travel to Uganda due to heightened concerns over terrorism threats in the region. The advisory comes in the wake of recent security alerts and incidents that have raised concerns about the safety of visitors in the country.

The US Department of State has designated Uganda as a Level 3 advisory, which means “reconsider travel” due to the ongoing threat of terrorism. The advisory specifically warns of the potential for terrorist attacks not only in Uganda but also throughout the region.

In a statement released on Monday, the US Embassy in Kampala City cited recent security developments, including the discovery of an improvised explosive device (IED) near a church in the Rubaga Division on September 3. Although the police successfully located and defused the device, the incident raised alarm bells.

“We remind you that the US Department of State’s travel advisory for Uganda is at a Level 3 (reconsider travel) for terrorism. There remains a threat of terrorist attacks in Uganda and throughout the region. As anyone can be a victim, US citizens should remain alert and avoid large public gatherings,” the embassy’s statement emphasized.

The heightened alert follows an arrest made by the Uganda Police Force on Sunday when they apprehended a suicide bomber attempting to enter the Miracle Centre Cathedral in Rubaga Division, Kampala City. During the operation, an IED was discovered and safely detonated. The suspect was found in possession of alarming materials, including a dry battery, a detonator card, explosive powder, nails, and other suspicious items.

Additionally, the police disclosed that five other IEDs were recovered in Rubaga Division, leading to the arrest of six individuals. However, the police spokesperson, Mr. Fred Enanga, assured the public that these actions had not significantly increased the overall security threat level in the country.

Despite the ongoing counter-terrorism operations, the United States and other nations continue to advise their citizens to exercise caution while in Uganda. The UK issued a similar terror alert earlier this year, stating that terrorist attacks were likely to occur in the country. While the warning initially drew criticism from Ugandan authorities, subsequent security developments have supported the concerns raised by international governments.

As the security situation unfolds, it is imperative that both foreign visitors and Ugandan citizens remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or objects to the authorities. Terrorism remains a real and persistent threat, and collective vigilance is essential to safeguarding lives and maintaining peace and security in the region.
