MADI OKOLLO – The Police have arrested 13 people for allegedly murdering six refugees from a refugee camp in Madi Okollo district.

The arrest follows murder of six migrants of Rhino Camp Refugees Settlement at Tika 1, block ‘D,’ Rigbwo Sub County in Madi Okollo.

It is alleged that the incident happened after refugee youths assaulted one of the residents who was grazing cattle near the resettlement camp, prompting the angry relatives and mob to attack the camp and kill six.

The Police spokesperson in West Nile region, SP Josephine Angucia has confirmed, saying bodies of the deceased have been taken to Arua Mortuary for post mortem and hunt for more suspects is on.

“We have arrested thirteen suspects for murdering six people in a refugee camp, the scene has been preserved for further analysis and we have made combined deployment of police supported by the UPDF,” Angucia said.

She added that investigations are ongoing and more suspects are yet to be arrested.

According to Police, one Ajute Rahman Yassin, was on Friday (September 11, 2020), looking after cattle near the resettlement camp and that he was assaulted by refugee youths.

He reported to his uncle, Olega, who also doubles as the LC II Chairperson of Kwili Parish, Odraku village in Rigbwo Sub County.

“Ajute was rushed to a Health Center for treatment but ladies from Olega’s family ran to the trading centre spreading false information that the assaulted boy was dead.

Therefore the angry mob organized, went and attacked the refugee settlement camp, killing six and injuring four others,” Angucia said.
