Inspector General of Police John Martins Okoth Ochola has recently announced the promotion of 9,312 officers at various ranks within the police force. This significant promotion exercise, considered the largest in the force’s history, was based on several criteria, as stated by deputy police spokesperson Polly Namaye.

Namaye explained that the promotions were determined by factors such as seniority, work record, acting positions, exemplary performance in operations, execution of assigned tasks, and disciplinary record. The officers who met these criteria were duly elevated in rank, reflecting their dedication and commitment to their duties.

The breakdown of the promotions includes 1,145 Assistant Inspectors promoted to Inspectors, five Head Constable Majors promoted to Inspectors, 28 Station Sergeants promoted to Head Constables, 1,531 Sergeants promoted to Assistant Inspectors of Police, 2,644 Corporals promoted to Sergeants, and 3,956 Constables promoted to Corporals.

Namaye took the opportunity to congratulate the officers who were promoted and extended her felicitations to their families. She emphasized that these promotions were well-deserved and encouraged the officers, as well as their colleagues, to continue their diligent service to the public.

This announcement follows a series of promotions made last year in August by President Museveni, who, in his capacity as the commander in chief of the armed forces, promoted 773 senior police officers from Assistant Superintendent of Police to Assistant Inspector General of Police.

Prior to these recent promotions, the police force had experienced a six-year period without any promotions for senior officers, leading to some officers assuming acting positions that did not align with their ranks. This situation created an opportunity for fraudulent individuals to exploit the officers’ aspirations for promotion. Scammers, posing as senior police officers from the police headquarters, deceived and defrauded many officers by promising them promotions in exchange for large sums of money. Unfortunately, these promises turned out to be false, and officers fell victim to these fraudulent schemes.

With the new promotions, it is expected that the morale and motivation within the police force will be boosted. The recognition of officers’ hard work and dedication serves as an encouragement for all members to continue their tireless efforts in upholding law and order in the country.
