MTN Uganda has clarified that the security breach experienced by one of their contractors Pegasus Technologies Limited did not affect their core mobile money services.
In statement, the CEO of MTN, Wim Vanhelleputte said investigations are underway by the Uganda police to establish what went wrong.
“The MTN mobile money platform complies with the highest international ICT security standards and is subjected to regular assessments and reviews by internal and external assurance providers,” he wrote in a statement.
Early this week, suspected hackers infiltrated the systems of Pegasus Technologies and reportedly took off with an unspecified amount of money belonging to several companies including banks and telecos.
Pegasus Technologies is the company that translates money from banks into mobile money transfers between banks and telecom companies.
Wim Vanhelleputte said although the incident did not affect any customer money mobile balances, a limited number of other services aggregated through the third-party provider were suspended as a precautionary safety measure. These include mobile money transactions between MTN and other telecommunication networks.
