Lira district Covid-19 treatment centre at Lira Regional Referral hospital, northern Uganda, has filled up and run out of food for patients. Currently, the treatment centre has 32 patients admitted instead of the recommended 20 patients.

Milton Odongo, the Lira resident district commissioner who also doubles as the chairperson of the Covid-19 district task force, says that they have identified three other treatment centres including Lira University Teaching hospital, PAG health centre IV I and Amach health centre IV to admit the swelling coronavirus patient cases.

He says that district health authorities and members of the Covid-19 taskforce have embarked on community mobilization and sensitization to curb further spread of the virus. According to Odongo, the local community is very lax in enforcing coronavirus disease preventive guidelines and are not adhering to social distancing, face mask-wearing and hand washing.

On Sunday, four health workers at the hospital tested positive for Covid19. Dr Patrick Odongo, a senior medical officer at the hospital also succumbed to the virus.

On Monday, Lira district headquarters was closed after one staff tested positive to Covid-19.
