Kisubi Hospital, one of Uganda’s leading healthcare providers, has made a significant leap in cardiac care with the introduction of advanced Cathlab technology. This new development allows the facility to perform a variety of complex heart procedures locally, ensuring better treatment options for Ugandans and reducing the need for patients to seek care abroad.
The hospital’s Cathlab is now actively facilitating procedures like pacemaker insertions and interventional therapies aimed at treating heart conditions such as heart failure, blood clots, and heart attacks. These services, which were previously limited to international hospitals, now offer hope for many Ugandans who would otherwise have to endure costly travel for treatment.
“We help prevent heart failure, heart attacks, and blood clots, offering hope and healing to many patients,” said Kisubi Hospital in a statement on their social media. The introduction of Cathlab technology is part of the hospital’s ongoing efforts to provide specialized services that cater to Uganda’s growing need for advanced medical treatment.
The hospital has also highlighted a growing trend in Uganda’s healthcare landscape—patients often misdiagnosing heart conditions as ulcers. This has resulted in delayed treatments, as many individuals unknowingly undergo prolonged treatments for ulcers when their underlying problem is cardiac-related. Kisubi Hospital has urged the public to remain vigilant and seek medical attention for persistent symptoms, stressing the importance of early detection.
Recent data from the Uganda Heart Institute reveals that non-communicable diseases like heart disease, stroke, and hypertension are on the rise, with these conditions contributing to over 30% of deaths in the country. The World Health Organization estimates that about 10% of Uganda’s adult population suffers from hypertension, a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
The addition of Cathlab technology at Kisubi Hospital is a milestone for Uganda, which has historically had limited access to such specialized services. Previously, only the Uganda Heart Institute in Mulago, Kampala, offered advanced cardiac procedures. With the new technology, Kisubi Hospital is reducing the financial burden on patients, who no longer need to travel abroad for life-saving interventions. The cost-effectiveness of local procedures is expected to ease the strain on both patients and the healthcare system.
In addition to the Cathlab, Kisubi Hospital has invested in other state-of-the-art medical equipment, such as the Siemens Magnetom Flow Plus MRI scanner, becoming the first in East and Central Africa to operate this model. The hospital’s continuous expansion of specialized services reflects Uganda’s growing capacity to manage both communicable and non-communicable diseases, improving access to advanced treatments for all.https://www.kisubihospital.co.ug/category/video/
