Security personnel shot one person dead in Kamuli District after a machete-wielding gang attacked the home of Buzaya County MP Martin Muzale. The deceased, identified as Sowedi Egumbye, was allegedly leading a group of armed youth who stormed Muzale’s residence in Kasambira village, Nawanyago Town Council, on Friday night. Muzale said the group carried machetes, hammers, and other sharp weapons, and violently disrupted a meeting he was holding with his polling agents.
“They jumped over the gate and began attacking my agents. Five of them sustained severe injuries,” Muzale stated.
According to the MP, the gang also kidnapped several of his agents and fled in four commuter taxis, commonly known as “drones.”
Police and UPDF personnel from the Busoga North region quickly responded to the incident. Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha confirmed that security forces pursued the suspects. Officers fired warning shots to force the group to surrender, but the attackers reportedly refused to stop.
Security personnel then shot at one of the fleeing vehicles, killing Egumbye. Inside the taxis, police recovered an assortment of weapons, including machetes, hoes, hammers, and knives.
Egumbye’s wife, Sarah Auma, is an aspiring candidate for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) LCV flag bearer position for Kamuli District, further fueling speculation about the motive behind the attack.
Kasadha emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that security has been tightened in the area to prevent further violence.
