In a landmark event held in Kamuli district, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, the Kamuli Woman Member of Parliament and Minister of East African Affairs, reassured farmers in Busoga of the continued support from the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB). Kadaga presided over the distribution of livestock and farming inputs aimed at empowering farmers in the region and fostering agricultural transformation.
The Role of NAGRC in Busoga’s Agricultural Development
The NAGRC’s commitment to advancing agricultural practices in Busoga was on full display during the event. Kadaga and NAGRC officials distributed 50,000 Kuroiler chickens, 180 grandparent pure-bred pigs, 185 Kasolwe goats, 500 bags of fertility-boosting mineral salt, and other essential farming supplies. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize farming in Busoga by introducing high-value livestock and agro-enterprises as an alternative to the region’s traditional sugarcane farming.
Kasolwe Stock Farm: A Pillar of Agricultural Innovation
Kasolwe Stock Farm, located in Kamuli, plays a pivotal role in NAGRC’s agricultural vision. Under NAGRC’s management, the farm has undergone a significant transformation, now housing various agro-enterprises, including intensive dairy cattle breeding, pig breeding, poultry breeding, and fish farming. One of the farm’s most notable achievements is the development of the Kasolwe Brown Goat, a breed recognized for its fast growth, twinning ability, and resilience in harsh environments. This goat breed has quickly become a sought-after commodity among farmers across East Africa.
The Kasolwe Feed Production Plant
A major contributor to the success of Kasolwe Stock Farm is its animal feed production plant. Officially launched by Kadaga in 2022, the facility produces a wide range of compounded feeds for dairy cows, poultry, fish, and goats. The plant sources its raw materials locally from Busoga, fostering economic growth within the community. The availability of high-quality, affordable animal feed has helped improve local farmers’ productivity and, by extension, their livelihoods.
Kadaga’s Continued Advocacy for Busoga Farmers
Kadaga commended NAGRC for its consistent efforts to support local farmers with advanced breeding stock, AI services, and critical agricultural tools. She emphasized the need to diversify farming in Busoga to ensure long-term economic stability for the region. “We are committed to providing our farmers with the best resources to help them succeed,” said Kadaga. “NAGRC’s efforts are key in modernizing agriculture in Busoga and improving the economic well-being of our people.”
Supporting Local Farmer Groups and Communities
The ceremony was also marked by the involvement of over 139 farmer groups from the Busoga region, who received livestock and essential farming resources. These groups, organized under Uganda First, have seen a direct benefit from NAGRC’s initiatives. Waiswa Kawali, spokesperson for Uganda First, praised the farm’s contributions and urged young farmers to take advantage of the opportunities at Kasolwe Stock Farm. He encouraged them to visit the farm and explore the various breeding stock available for purchase.
“Kasolwe is a prime example of how modern farming practices can uplift communities. We have the resources here to change our futures for the better,” said Kawali.
Artificial Insemination Services and Livestock Breeding
Another critical service provided by Kasolwe Stock Farm is its artificial insemination (AI) program. With over 10,000 cattle inseminated in the past two years, the farm has become a key player in enhancing livestock genetics in the region. Mr. Kaaku, NAGRC’s community breeding coordinator for Busoga, highlighted the success of the AI services, noting that high-quality semen and preservation technologies are provided to farmers throughout Uganda.
“We are proud to offer some of the best breeding stock in the country through our AI services, helping farmers improve their herds and increase productivity,” Kaaku explained.
Looking Ahead: Kasolwe’s Centre of Excellence
Looking forward, Kadaga reiterated her commitment to ensuring the completion of the Kasolwe farmer training hostel and skilling centre complex. This Centre of Excellence will provide critical training and skills development for farmers, further enhancing the region’s agricultural potential. Kadaga’s continued lobbying for government support aims to ensure the facility’s completion, which will serve as a hub for learning and development in modern farming techniques.
