Joel Ssenyonyi, a Member of Parliament for Nakawa West and a member of the National Unity Platform, officially assumed the role of Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Uganda’s parliament on January 9, 2024. Speaker Anita Among made the announcement, and Ssenyonyi expressed his commitment to effectively carrying out his responsibilities. He called on fellow legislators to support him in the crucial task of holding the government accountable, emphasizing that this benefits all members of parliament and the Ugandan people.
Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, Ssenyonyi’s immediate predecessor, spoke highly of the new LOP, urging colleagues to provide him with the same support. Despite Ssenyonyi’s youth, Mpuuga emphasized his reasonableness and deserving nature for the position. Mpuuga offered valuable advice to Ssenyonyi, encouraging effective communication, avoiding personalization of issues, and assuring him of ongoing support.
Ssenyonyi’s appointment as the new LOP took place in December 2023 after the conclusion of Mpuuga’s tenure. However, even before officially assuming his role, Ssenyonyi faced criticism from some political figures who questioned his suitability for the position due to his age. Despite this, Ssenyonyi is determined to fulfill his responsibilities and has garnered support from colleagues who recognize his capabilities and dedication to the role.
