Uganda’s Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo has officially received the green light from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host high-profile continental football tournaments, further cementing its place as a premier sporting venue in Africa.
Less than a year after its grand reopening on June 1, 2024, the state-of-the-art facility has met CAF’s stringent standards, making it eligible to stage prestigious competitions such as the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), men’s U17, U20, and U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, and the preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.
A Global Standard in African Football
CAF commended Hamz Stadium for its outstanding infrastructure and its role in enhancing the quality and competitiveness of African football. This recognition adds to a growing list of accolades for the stadium.
In October 2024, FIFA officially certified its playing surface, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino personally presenting the certification. The facility was also shortlisted for a prestigious global sports venue award earlier this year, reinforcing its international reputation.

Formerly known as Nakivubo War Memorial Grounds, Hamz Stadium underwent an extensive transformation under the leadership of business tycoon Haji Dr. Hamis Kiggundu, in collaboration with the Ugandan government.
