Kampala’s New Jewel: Unveiling Hamz Stadium

June 1, 2024, will forever be etched in the hearts of Ugandans as the grand opening of Hamz Stadium, formerly Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium, marked a transformative moment for the nation’s sports and entertainment scene. Hamis Kiggundu’s visionary project, executed through Ham Enterprises (U) Ltd in collaboration with the Ugandan Government, came to vibrant life, promising a bright future for the city’s cultural and athletic aspirations.

Turning Dreams into Reality

The ambitious renovation journey, initiated in 2017, was a testament to the power of public-private partnership. Hamis Kiggundu’s dream to rejuvenate this historic stadium culminated in a state-of-the-art facility, heralded by President Museveni during the commissioning ceremony on April 25, 2024. The 49-year lease granted to Kiggundu underscores his pivotal role in this monumental development.

An Unforgettable Night of Festivities

The grand opening on June 1, 2024, was a spectacle of grandeur and joy. A mesmerizing 10-minute fireworks display at 7:00 PM set the celebratory tone, followed by a diverse array of sports and entertainment events. The stadium, nearly filled to its 35,000 capacity, buzzed with excitement as all 40 executive boxes sold out, showcasing the public’s immense support.

Sports and Entertainment Extravaganza

The night was packed with thrilling activities, starting with URA FC’s 3-0 victory over Kitara FC. Following another brilliant fireworks display, top Ugandan artists like Rema, Eddy Kenzo, and Bebe Cool energized the crowd with electrifying performances. SC Villa edged out Express FC with a 1-0 win, and boxing enthusiasts cheered as Zahara Nandawula and Isaac Zebra Jr claimed their respective victories. A draw match between Golola Moses and Umar Sematta added to the thrill.

Elite Attendance and Security

The event drew a star-studded lineup of VVIPs and celebrities, including former Vice Presidents Gilbert Bukenya and Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, FUFA President Moses Magogo, and tycoon Ahmed Omar Mandela. Tight security ensured a safe celebration, with restricted city access and rigorous checks enhancing the event’s organization.

Exceptional Medical and Culinary Services

Emergency medical services were on standby, ensuring spectators’ well-being. The swift response to Muhindo Geofrey’s medical emergency exemplified the high level of care provided. Attendees also enjoyed an array of complimentary meals and drinks, courtesy of Ham, adding a hospitable touch to the grand occasion.

Ham’s Gratitude and Vision

Hamis Kiggundu expressed heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in the event’s success. “Thanks to everyone, it was such a successful and wonderful grand opening,” he said. “The stadium is now ready to host sports and other activities. For God and My Country,” he added, signaling the start of a new era for Hamz Stadium.

A New Dawn for Ugandan Sports and Entertainment

The grand opening of Hamz Stadium was more than an event; it was a symbol of unity, talent, and cultural pride. The magical night, filled with sports, music, and fireworks, will be remembered as the dawn of a new chapter in Ugandan sports and entertainment history.
