In a bid to address the rising conflicts surrounding idle land across the country, the Minister of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Ms. Judith Nabakooba, has called for urgent action to curb the activities of fraudsters taking advantage of unutilized land. Nabakooba emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to resolving land disputes and protecting the rights of rightful occupants.

Over the past few years, cases of land-related conflicts have been on the rise, with fraudsters exploiting the situation to defraud unsuspecting individuals and communities. The lack of proper utilization of idle land has inadvertently created an environment ripe for illegal activities, prompting the government to intervene.

Speaking during a press conference held at the ministry headquarters in the capital city, Minister Nabakooba highlighted the detrimental effects of land wrangles on the socio-economic fabric of the nation. She emphasized that land disputes have led to a loss of livelihoods, displacement of families, and a decline in public trust in the land administration system.

“The issue of idle land is a ticking time bomb that we cannot afford to ignore any longer,” Minister Nabakooba stated firmly. “Fraudsters and land grabbers are exploiting the situation to enrich themselves at the expense of vulnerable communities. We must take decisive action to protect the rightful occupants and ensure sustainable land use.”

To address the issue, the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development has developed a multifaceted plan aimed at restoring order and resolving land conflicts. The strategy includes:

  1. Strengthening Land Administration: The government plans to invest in improving land administration systems, including digitization of land records, enhancing surveying and mapping capabilities, and implementing transparent land registration processes. These measures will ensure that land transactions are properly documented, reducing the potential for fraud.
  2. Public Awareness Campaigns: The ministry intends to launch a comprehensive public awareness campaign to educate citizens on their land rights and the importance of utilizing idle land. Through community engagement and targeted information dissemination, the government hopes to promote responsible land ownership and discourage fraudulent practices.
  3. Dispute Resolution Mechanisms: The government will establish specialized land tribunals and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to provide swift and fair resolutions to land conflicts. These platforms will work closely with local communities and stakeholders to address disputes effectively and prevent them from escalating further.
  4. Collaboration with Security Agencies: Minister Nabakooba stressed the importance of collaboration between the Ministry of Lands and relevant security agencies to combat land fraud. Joint efforts will focus on identifying and apprehending fraudsters involved in illegal land transactions, ensuring they face the full force of the law.

The minister also urged citizens to report suspected cases of land fraud to the relevant authorities, assuring the public that their concerns would be addressed promptly and with utmost seriousness.

As the government takes a proactive stance to tackle the escalating wrangles over idle land exploitation, it is hoped that these measures will bring about sustainable land use, protect the rights of rightful occupants, and restore public confidence in the land administration system.
