Prominent Opposition Politician John Kazoora Dies at Home in Kigo
John Kazoora, a former Member of Parliament for Kashari County and a senior figure in Uganda’s Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), has died. His passing was confirmed on the morning of April 20, 2025, though the exact cause remains unannounced.
Sources revealed that Kazoora became critically ill at his residence in Kigo, near Entebbe Road, and was rushed to Nakasero Hospital, where he was later declared dead. Reports indicate he had been undergoing dialysis treatment since 2024.
Legacy of a Political and Military Figure
Kazoora began his career as a bush war fighter alongside President Yoweri Museveni, but later turned into one of the regime’s most vocal critics. He left the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the early 2000s and was instrumental in founding the FDC, working closely with Dr. Kizza Besigye.
He served as MP for Kashari County in Uganda’s Sixth Parliament (1996–2001) under the no-party Movement system, before aligning with the opposition during Uganda’s return to multiparty politics. In 2006, he was appointed Director of Operations for the FDC, cementing his role in championing political reform.
Military to Civilian Transition
Kazoora held the military rank of Major before retiring and entering public service. His career shift reflected his commitment to democratic governance, transparency, and the separation of military and civil authority in Uganda’s politics.
In recent years, he maintained a low public profile, occasionally commenting on national affairs but mostly away from the political frontline.
Final Reflections and Burial
His death marks the loss of a veteran opposition voice and a figure from Uganda’s pivotal transitional era. Burial arrangements are yet to be officially announced by the family.
