In a significant development, the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) has announced its plans to recover more than Shs2 billion from a power company that was supplying electricity to 10 districts in the northern region of the country. The move comes after a thorough investigation into the company’s operations and financial activities raised concerns about potential irregularities.

The power company in question, which has not been named yet, had been granted a license to supply electricity to various regions in the northern part of the country. However, after receiving numerous complaints from consumers, ERA launched an inquiry into the company’s billing practices, service quality, and financial records.

According to the preliminary findings of the investigation, there were several discrepancies in the company’s billing system, leading to inflated charges on consumers’ electricity bills. Moreover, many customers reported frequent power outages and poor customer service, indicating a lack of investment in infrastructure and maintenance.

“We take the welfare of consumers seriously, and we cannot allow power companies to take advantage of them through unfair billing practices or inadequate service delivery,” stated Dr. Jane Mugerwa, the CEO of ERA.

The ERA’s decision to take action and recover the funds is part of its commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in the electricity sector. The recovered amount will be refunded to affected consumers and reinvested in the region’s power infrastructure to improve reliability and service quality.

As part of the recovery process, ERA has already initiated legal actions against the power company, and they are closely monitoring its financial activities to prevent any attempts to evade repayment.

The news has been met with mixed reactions from the residents of the 10 affected districts. Many consumers expressed relief and satisfaction with ERA’s swift response to their complaints, while some others raised concerns about the impact of the company’s financial setbacks on the region’s overall power supply.

In response to these concerns, Dr. Mugerwa reassured the public that ERA is actively working with other power suppliers to ensure a seamless transition and uninterrupted power supply during this process. She also emphasized that ERA is committed to holding all power companies accountable to the highest standards to protect consumers’ interests.

Furthermore, ERA has urged consumers to report any irregularities or issues with their electricity bills or service quality to the authority. They have set up a dedicated helpline and email for complaints and feedback to strengthen their monitoring and regulation efforts further.

In conclusion, the ERA’s move to recover more than Shs2 billion from the northern power firm represents a significant step towards ensuring fairness, transparency, and improved service delivery in the electricity sector. By taking decisive action against irregularities and investing in the region’s power infrastructure, ERA aims to safeguard consumer rights and bolster the overall development of the region’s power supply.
