Equity Bank Uganda Retains Systemically Important Status for Third Year
KAMPALA, May 22, 2025 – Equity Bank Uganda has once again been designated as a Domestic Systemically Important Bank (DSIB) by the Bank of Uganda, reinforcing its pivotal role in the country’s financial system. This marks the third consecutive year the institution has earned the high-status designation.
DSIBs are banks whose failure could significantly disrupt the financial system and economy. Equity Bank’s continued recognition is a reflection of its financial resilience, strong governance, and adherence to regulatory standards.
Gift Shoko, Managing Director of Equity Bank Uganda, hailed the milestone:
“Being named a DSIB for the third year is a reflection of the trust our customers place in us and our unwavering commitment to financial stability. We are proud to be a key pillar in Uganda’s banking ecosystem.”
The bank’s recognition is attributed to its strategic focus on digital transformation, customer-focused services, and collaborations with fintech companies and strategic partners. These efforts have helped the bank expand its services while staying at the forefront of innovation and financial inclusion.
As a DSIB, Equity Bank Uganda is required to meet stricter regulatory requirements, including higher capital buffers, to ensure it can withstand financial shocks and maintain stability. These enhanced safeguards align with international banking standards.
Looking ahead, Equity Bank plans to scale its innovation efforts, expand access to finance, and support inclusive economic growth throughout Uganda. Its designation as a DSIB further cements its position as a leading and trusted financial institution in the country.
