Minister Betty Amongi, responsible for Gender, Labour, and Social Development, recently disclosed that the Ugandan government has declined a labor export company’s request to recruit Ugandan citizens for work in Ukraine. During a parliamentary session, Amongi emphasized that the decision was based on security concerns rather than solely labor-related issues. While the specific company and job details were not mentioned, Amongi defended the Employment (Amendment) (No.2) Bill 2022, which aims to improve the regulation and reform of employment agencies involved in the recruitment of Ugandans for overseas employment. She highlighted the growing number of Ugandans seeking work abroad and migrants coming to Uganda for employment, stressing the need for proper regulation and reforms in these areas, which have remained inadequate until now.
