KAMPALA – In a shocking development, Brookside Dairy Uganda, one of the leading dairy companies in the country, has been compelled to cut down its production by a staggering 75 percent, leading to the dismissal of at least 200 workers. The company cited its inability to export milk produced since March, and it alleges that its 116 export permit applications to Kenya have been consistently rejected. Kenya, Uganda’s largest market in East Africa, has been a crucial trading partner for the dairy industry.

Brookside Dairy Uganda, renowned for its high-quality dairy products, has been grappling with a sudden halt in its exports to Kenya, where it has been experiencing growing demand over the years. The rejection of export permits by Nairobi has left the company in a precarious position, leading to a substantial production cut and, inevitably, unfortunate job losses.

Meanwhile, the company’s competitors, particularly Pearl Dairy, have reportedly been allowed to continue exporting their products to Kenya, raising questions about the reasons behind the preferential treatment. The disparity in treatment has sparked concerns among stakeholders, including Uganda’s private sector, which has expressed its disappointment and frustration over the unequal treatment of dairy exporters.

Uganda’s private sector leaders have urged the government to address the trade impasse with Kenya promptly. They warn that if Nairobi continues to deny Uganda’s dairy exports access to the Kenyan market, it may be necessary for Kampala to retaliate with reciprocal sanctions against Kenyan goods. This potential retaliatory measure could strain the longstanding trade relations between the two neighboring nations and have far-reaching implications for the regional economy.

In recent years, Uganda has undertaken significant efforts to increase its milk production and has been actively seeking new markets for its surplus milk, which amounts to an impressive 3.2 billion liters annually. However, the failure to secure sufficient consumer markets, particularly in Kenya, has placed considerable strain on the domestic dairy industry.

As the situation unfolds, industry experts and stakeholders are calling for immediate diplomatic interventions to resolve the trade dispute between Uganda and Kenya. Such a resolution would not only benefit Brookside Dairy but also ensure the stability and growth of the entire Ugandan dairy sector.

It remains to be seen how the governments of Uganda and Kenya will address this escalating trade issue and find a mutually agreeable solution. The livelihoods of hundreds of workers and the future of the dairy industry in Uganda hinge on the resolution of this trade impasse with Kenya. As both nations navigate through this challenging period, it is hoped that amicable negotiations will pave the way for a prosperous and harmonious trade relationship in the East African region.
