Bobi Wine Nomination Receives Fresh Support from NUP

The Bobi Wine nomination process has entered a critical phase as the National Unity Platform (NUP) submitted thousands of additional signatures to Uganda’s Electoral Commission (EC) in a last-minute effort to secure their party president Robert Kyagulanyi’s candidacy for the 2026 presidential elections.

The submission comes days after the EC rejected Bobi Wine’s initial list, citing that the party had failed to meet the legal requirement of endorsements from at least 100 registered voters in two-thirds of Uganda’s districts. The rejection triggered strong reactions from the NUP camp, who accused the EC of obstructing the party’s bid.

NUP Mobilizes Support Across Districts

Secretary-General David Lewis Rubongoya confirmed the resubmission, praising the rapid and widespread mobilization by district teams. “Thousands more signatures submitted to the EC for the nomination of Bobi Wine,” Rubongoya said. He added, “We shall leave no stone unturned,” reflecting the party’s determination to meet the nomination requirements before the September 23-24 deadline.

Other Aspirants Face Similar Scrutiny

The EC has also flagged deficiencies in the endorsements of other aspirants, including Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) leader Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu, whose verification results showed only 48 out of 98 districts met the required threshold. EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama reminded all candidates that the nomination window closes on September 24, after which the final list of presidential candidates will be announced.

Political Implications

Analysts suggest that the outcome of the Bobi Wine nomination submission could set the tone for the 2026 campaign season, with opposition parties striving to challenge the long-standing rule of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The process underscores the high stakes and intense political activity ahead of Uganda’s upcoming general elections.
