Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, is set to kick off his 2026 presidential campaign today in Jinja, marking the start of a week-long tour across eastern Uganda. The National Unity Platform (NUP) leader’s launch in the Busoga region comes after receiving significant backing from Buganda elders, who offered a tacit endorsement at a private dinner held on Sunday night.
The Buganda group, led by former premier Joseph Mulwanyamuli Ssemwogerere, did not issue a formal statement, but their quiet support was viewed as politically symbolic. This endorsement adds weight to Bobi Wine’s campaign, especially in a region known for its strong political activism.
Strategic Start to Campaign in Busoga
Kyagulanyi’s decision to launch his campaign in Busoga is seen as highly symbolic. The region, often referred to as the cradle of poverty, grapples with high unemployment rates, poor healthcare access, and persistent land disputes. Development indices consistently show eastern Uganda trailing other regions in education and income. As such, the area represents a critical battleground for Bobi Wine’s political promises, particularly his focus on governance reform, anti-corruption measures, and youth empowerment.
With youth unemployment disproportionately affecting young Ugandans, Kyagulanyi’s message of change and empowerment is expected to resonate deeply with the region’s youth, who make up the majority of the population.
Elder Support and Political Weight
Kyagulanyi’s strategic political alliance with Buganda elders is expected to carry significant weight. In 2021, Bobi Wine dominated the Buganda region, winning overwhelming support from central districts and securing some of his highest vote margins. His 2026 campaign aims to expand this base, with plans to reach voters in Busoga sub-region where NUP performed well in the past election.
The Buganda elders’ visit symbolizes unity and belief in his vision for a transformed Uganda. By joining forces with eastern Uganda’s tradition of resistance politics, Kyagulanyi seeks to combine Buganda’s cultural influence with eastern Uganda’s vocal political activism, aiming to create a powerful coalition of support.
A Generational Battle for Change
Bobi Wine, a former pop star turned political figure, has framed his 2026 election bid as a generational struggle against President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986. With Kyagulanyi’s support growing across key regions and demographics, the 2026 presidential race promises to be one of the most heated contests in Uganda’s history.
