Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, has praised President Museveni for his courageous decision to sign the Anti-Homosexuality bill of 2023, which has now become law.
Dr. Kazimba expressed gratitude that the new law upholds the positive aspects of the existing provisions in the penal code. He particularly appreciated the law’s emphasis on safeguarding children through robust anti-grooming measures, strict restrictions on promoting homosexuality, and the prohibition of employment in child-focused organizations for individuals convicted under the act. He also acknowledged the law’s intention to protect individuals from false allegations.
Additionally, Dr. Kazimba commended the President for standing firm against Western pressure. However, he clarified that the Church of Uganda does not endorse the death penalty as stated in the new law for aggravated defilement and aggravated homosexuality. Instead, he suggested that life imprisonment should be the appropriate punishment for such offenses.
