Al-Shabaab Storms Mogadishu Prison After Massive Car Bomb Blast

Al-Shabaab militants have carried out a bold raid in the heart of Mogadishu, detonating a car bomb and storming the heavily guarded Godka Jilacow Prison. The Al-Shabaab Mogadishu attack marks one of the most daring assaults on Somalia’s intelligence infrastructure in recent years.

Eyewitnesses reported that a powerful explosion shook Boondheere District around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed by sustained gunfire lasting nearly an hour. “We heard a massive blast that shook the entire neighborhood before gunfire erupted,” said Abdi Warsame, a shopkeeper near the scene. “Smoke covered the sky as people ran in all directions.”

Security sources confirmed that the attackers detonated an explosives-laden vehicle near the outer wall of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) compound, allowing armed fighters to storm the perimeter. Ambulances were seen rushing victims to hospitals, though officials have not disclosed casualty figures.

Godka Jilacow: Somalia’s High-Security Prison Targeted

Godka Jilacow, operated by NISA, houses high-profile terrorism suspects and serves as a major command center for Somalia’s counterterrorism operations. The Al-Shabaab Mogadishu attack exploited vulnerabilities in the facility’s outer defenses, underscoring the group’s ability to strike even the country’s most secure sites.

A NISA officer speaking anonymously confirmed that the militants attempted to breach the main detention wing but were stopped before reaching the inner cells. “Our forces contained them in time,” he said. Meanwhile, heavy reinforcements were deployed across Mogadishu, including near Villa Somalia — the presidential palace.

Al-Shabaab’s Symbolic and Strategic Message

Analysts say the assault was both symbolic and strategic, aimed at undermining public confidence in the government’s security apparatus. “This was a message attack — to prove Al-Shabaab can still penetrate the capital’s most fortified areas,” noted security expert Hassan Abdullahi.

The group has previously targeted Godka Jilacow, notably in 2014, when dozens were killed during a similar raid. Although Somalia announced plans in 2018 to convert the site into an intelligence academy, parts of the complex reportedly continue to operate as a high-risk detention facility.

Regional and Global Implications

The Al-Shabaab Mogadishu attack follows renewed calls by Al-Qaeda leader Hamza bin Laden for affiliates to intensify strikes across Africa. This marks Al-Shabaab’s fourth major offensive in 2025, following deadly attacks in Kismayo, Beledweyne, and Afgooye.

As of late Saturday, gunfire could still be heard around Boondheere District as Somali forces conducted clearing operations. The full extent of the damage and possible prison escapes remained uncertain.

A senior police commander said the assault revealed the ongoing threat facing Somalia’s capital. “This attack shows the war is far from over. They are trying to regain psychological control of Mogadishu even as we drive them out of rural strongholds.”

The Al-Shabaab Mogadishu attack highlights the enduring volatility in Somalia’s fight against extremism and the continued resilience of militants despite regional counterterrorism operations.
