Kabale Diocese Flags Off 230 Pilgrims for 10-Day Walk to Namugongo
A group of 230 pilgrims from Kabale Diocese has embarked on a 10-day spiritual trek to Namugongo Shrine in preparation for Uganda Martyrs Day, celebrated each year on June 3.
Pilgrims from Kabale, Kisoro, Rubanda, and Rukiga districts gathered at the Our Lady of Good Shepherd Rushoroza Cathedral on Tuesday evening for a Holy Mass. The official flag-off took place at 4:00 a.m. Wednesday, led by Rev. Fr. Bruno Byomuhangi, Director of the Lay Apostolate Commission.
Fr. Byomuhangi encouraged the faithful to journey with courage, reflection, and commitment, reminding them to draw inspiration from the Uganda Martyrs, who were executed for their Christian faith between 1885 and 1887 under Kabaka Mwanga II.
Faith, Discipline, and Purpose
Alphonse Biraho, chairperson of the Uganda Martyrs Association in Kabale Diocese, announced that the group is expected to arrive in Namugongo on May 31. He urged the pilgrims to observe road safety, remain disciplined, and support one another as a team throughout the journey.
Among the walkers is Cynthia Tushabomwe, a 20-year-old Senior Six student from St. Agatha Girls’ School in Kakore, Rubanda District. This marks her first pilgrimage, and she is praying for academic success and peace for her family and the country.
Raulent Nsengimana, aged 62, is a seasoned pilgrim who has participated in the annual walk since 2011. His intentions this year include prayers for church leadership and national peace.
Spiritual Journey with a National Symbol
The Namugongo pilgrimage is a symbol of devotion, resilience, and heritage in Uganda’s Christian community. Pilgrims walk hundreds of kilometers to honor the Uganda Martyrs, whose sacrifice continues to inspire millions across the country and beyond.
