KAWEMPE | On August 3, 2021, youth in Kawempe, led by youth counselor and National Unity Platform (NUP) member Abdullah, launched the “Smart Town Initiative,” a grassroots effort to address mounting concerns about pollution and poor drainage in their community. Kawempe, a densely populated area of Kampala, has long struggled with inadequate waste management and flooding due to neglected drainage systems, causing frustration among residents.

Abdullah, who works as a youth counselor and is a passionate supporter of NUP’s goals of democratic reform and civic empowerment, explained the motivation behind the initiative. “It has to start with us. My colleagues and I decided to take the first step. If those responsible have failed, at least they can see and learn from this. We want a clean and standard city, and if it means starting on our own, so be it. The authorities have left it to us, so it’s time we take responsibility as they work on other priorities.”

The youth-led cleanup involved clearing garbage from clogged drains and removing litter from public spaces, a move that has significantly improved the area’s appearance and helped ease some drainage issues. Residents, who have grown disillusioned with Kampala’s sanitation services, welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm. One local described the effort as “long overdue,” adding, “Whenever it rains, water floods our homes because the drains are blocked with rubbish. This effort brings us hope that positive change is possible.”

Joining Abdullah and his team was the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Fans Group, whose members were inspired by the youth-driven initiative.  Sophia Najjemba, leader of the KCCA Fans Group, commended Abdullah’s leadership and vision, stating, “Abdullah’s dedication to improving our town is inspiring. The youth should look to him as a role model and realize that we need action, not just words, to address our problems. This initiative is a call to others: we need to step up, rather than wait for authorities.”

As a dedicated NUP member, Abdullah’s work reflects his broader commitment to community empowerment, which aligns with NUP’s vision for a democratic, citizen-driven Uganda. His role as a youth counselor also brings added impact, as he mentors young people to take responsibility, participate in community initiatives, and advocate for change.

Through the Smart Town Initiative, Abdullah and the youth of Kawempe are demonstrating the power of community action, setting an example of civic responsibility, and fostering a culture of resilience, cooperation, and political empowerment in Kampala.
