Private David Oyet, a Uganda Peoples Defense Forces-UPDF soldier, attached to Uganda Railways Corporation’s (URC) Jinja station, was on Friday night knocked dead by a speeding saloon car along the Jinja-Iganga highway, in the Southern division of Jinja city.

Oyet is among the soldiers, who were deployed to guard the Jinja railway station in October, 2021.

Oyet was knocked dead while crossing the road after escorting his guests, who were headed to board a motorcycle opposite railway police station.

The accident occurred at around 8:30pm and Oyet was confirmed dead on arrival at Jinja regional referral hospital’s emergency unit.

A soldier who spoke to us on condition of anonymity says that they gave first aid to their colleague and rushed him to hospital, but he bled profusely and succumbed to the injuries on arrival.

“We cleaned the wounds and rushed Oyet to Jinja hospital however, he lost a lot of blood and we lost him,” he says.

Kiira police region’s spokesperson, James Mubi says that, the deceased has been taken to Jinja regional referral hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem and further guidance from UPDF authorities, who will directly manage his final sendoff.

Mubi added that they are tracking down the suspects through the usage of footage captured by the highway CCTV cameras within the vicinity of the accident scene.
