Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs General Abubakhar Jeje Odongo met on September 9 with Ambassador Fatima Fernandes Juarez of Venezuela to reaffirm commitments to expand Uganda Venezuela relations. The meeting took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kampala.
Gen Odongo praised the warm ties between the two countries, while Ambassador Juarez thanked the Ugandan government for the hospitality she has enjoyed since assuming her post earlier this year. She also delivered an invitation from Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil for Gen Odongo to serve as a keynote speaker at the International Forum on “Colonialism, Neocolonialism and their Consequences,” scheduled for October 2–3 in Caracas. The event will examine the legacy of colonial rule, the persistence of neocolonial practices, and global calls for reparations.
In addition, Ambassador Juarez proposed establishing a Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) to institutionalise cooperation, with discussions planned for March 2025. In his response, Gen Odongo reaffirmed Uganda’s solidarity with Venezuela and expressed readiness to broaden bilateral engagement. He emphasized that Uganda and Venezuela also share interests in multilateral platforms, especially in pushing for historical justice, peace, and economic independence.
Both delegations concluded the meeting with a pledge to deepen cooperation. They highlighted friendship, mutual respect, and common values as the foundation for stronger diplomatic ties. The renewed commitment signals a fresh phase in Uganda Venezuela relations, with both nations eager to work together in regional and global affairs.
