Uganda Kicks Off Heroes Day 2025 With Free Health Services and Community Events in Lyantonde

As Uganda gears up to mark its 36th National Heroes Day on June 9, the Ministry for the Luwero-Rwenzori Region, under the Office of the Prime Minister, has launched a nationwide outreach program aimed at celebrating national heroes through healthcare, civic engagement, and community development.

In Lyantonde District, a three-day medical camp is currently underway at Lyantonde Technical Institute in Kaliro Sub County, running from May 28 to 30. The initiative offers free medical services to thousands of residents from the district and surrounding areas—providing access to healthcare that many could otherwise not afford.

Medical Services Empowering Communities

The health camp includes general consultations, dental and eye care, maternal services, dermatology, gynecology, mental health support, and diagnostics like malaria tests, blood pressure checks, ECGs, and diabetes and hypertension screenings. A fully stocked pharmacy is providing essential medication at no cost, and an emergency referral system is in place for more serious conditions.

The outreach is staffed by over 80 professionals, including specialists from Mulago Hospital, the Ministry of Health, and the Uganda Cancer Institute. In addition to clinical care, public health education sessions focus on hygiene, nutrition, disease prevention, and chronic illness management.

One local woman, who had long suffered from menstrual pain, praised the free care after receiving treatment and reassurance. “I was worried it could be cancer, but now I’m pain-free—and I didn’t pay a single shilling,” she said. A police officer stationed at the event also received urgent dental care and lauded the quality service.

Beyond Healthcare: Honoring Heroes Through Service

The Ministry’s efforts extend beyond health. Planned activities include a memorial ceremony for fallen veterans of the Liberation Struggle, tree planting drives to promote environmental awareness, and a youth soccer tournament aimed at fostering unity and reflection among the next generation.

Speaking on the purpose of the outreach, State Minister Hon. Alice Kaboyo emphasized its significance:

“Our heroes fought for freedom and dignity. These services are a living extension of that legacy—bringing impact directly into homes and communities.”

This year’s National Heroes Day celebration will be held on June 9, 2025, at Lyantonde Technical Institute Grounds under the theme:
“The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes: A Memorable Inspiration.”

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to preside over the event as Guest of Honour.

Minister Kaboyo called on all Ugandans, especially those in Lyantonde and nearby areas, to take part in the celebrations and ongoing activities, reaffirming national unity and service.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-27Mx0jJwI
