Security forces in Uganda have detained more than 300 opposition supporters and officials from the party of presidential candidate Bobi Wine since campaigning began. Joel Ssenyonyi, spokesperson for Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP), announced the figures, accusing the government of using arrests to instill fear among voters.

Police authorities provided a different account of the events. In an official statement, they reported detaining only seven people. They accused Wine’s supporters of throwing stones and injuring seven officers, stating that “security personnel responded by using public order measures to control rowdy crowds.”
