Uganda Christian University and Busitema University have been ordered to halt admitting students in their medicine and dentistry faculties.

This is because of concerns over poor infrastructure. The closure emerged after technical health experts from the East African Community inspected universities around the region.

About UCU, the report stated that, “The school of medicine/faculty of medicine does not meet the minimum standards of medical/dental students. Therefore, upon qualification, their graduates shall not be eligible for reciprocal recognition within the EAC partner states as set out in the mutual recognition agreement and EAC inspection and recognition of medical and dental school guidelines.”

The challenges cited include poor human resource, wanting infrastructure as well as governance equipment. The National Council for Higher Education was instructed to stop the activities of the medical school at the university until the above issues are addressed.

The continuing students are to be fused into other universities and courses appropriately. The management of UCU is yet to come up with a statement over this issue as it is involved in crisis meetings as of now. Also, Makerere University avoided closure of its medical school because it had met 60 percent of the requirements. It promised to fulfill the other 40 percent by May 2020.
