The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of Uganda, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, held a strategic meeting with Algeria’s Chief of Staff, General Saïd Chanegriha, in Algiers on Tuesday to enhance military cooperation and strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.

The meeting, hosted at the Algerian military headquarters, began with a formal military reception honoring General Muhoozi, underscoring the importance of the visit.

During the discussions, General Muhoozi emphasized the necessity of collaboration to address regional security challenges, stating:
“Strengthening our military ties with Algeria is a step toward fostering peace and stability in Africa. Together, we can tackle common security threats more effectively.”

Key points of discussion included intelligence sharing, joint training initiatives, and the exchange of expertise in defense strategies. Both parties agreed to formalize their cooperation through a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Algeria’s National People’s Army.

General Chanegriha expressed Algeria’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Uganda, highlighting their shared historical ties and the mutual goal of maintaining peace and security in their regions. He noted, “This partnership will enhance our capabilities to maintain peace and security in our regions.”

Senior Algerian military officials also attended the meeting, reflecting the commitment to advancing bilateral defense ties.

The MoU, once signed, will formalize and expand cooperation in various domains, marking a significant milestone in Uganda’s broader military diplomacy initiatives. General Muhoozi’s visit aligns with his ongoing efforts to build strategic partnerships across Africa and beyond.

Accompanying General Muhoozi were senior UPDF officials, including Maj Gen James Birungi (Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security), Maj Gen Bob Ogiki (Joint Staff Policy and Strategy), and Maj Gen Keith Katungi (5th Division Infantry Commander).

This meeting signifies a pivotal moment in Uganda-Algeria relations and sets the foundation for robust military collaboration aimed at achieving peace, stability, and prosperity across Africa.
