Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) have raised concerns about donations made to former President Donald Trump’s inaugural fund by prominent tech executives and companies, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and firms such as Google, Microsoft, and Uber.

In a letter to Altman, the senators alleged that these substantial contributions “raise questions about corruption and the influence of corporate money” on the administration. They suggested that Altman and others might have used their “massive contributions” to “avoid scrutiny, limit regulation, and buy favor,” particularly as OpenAI faces investigations by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Altman, who announced in December his intention to donate $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund, stated that he was “eager to support” efforts to lead the country into the age of artificial intelligence. However, the senators noted that his financial support comes at a time when OpenAI could benefit from regulatory decisions made by the administration.

The letter, which included questions to be answered by January 31, specifically asked, “When and under what circumstances did your company decide to make these contributions to the Trump inaugural fund?”

Altman defended his donation as a personal contribution, emphasizing that it was not made by OpenAI. He also pointed out the lack of similar scrutiny for his previous donations to Democratic campaigns, including those of Warren and President Joe Biden, saying it was “funny” that lawmakers never questioned those contributions.

Neither Senator Warren nor Senator Bennet immediately responded to requests for comment, leaving open the debate over the influence of corporate donations on political administrations.
