In a pivotal decision, the Tororo Chief Magistrate’s Court has dismissed the National Resistance Movement (NRM) incumbent Sarah Achieng Opendi’s application seeking a recount of votes in the contested 2026 Tororo District Woman MP election.

The court, led by Chief Magistrate Irene Nantebya, ruled against Opendi’s request to recount votes from 11 specific polling stations, citing concerns over the integrity of the ballot boxes. This ruling solidifies the victory of independent candidate Angella Akoth, who narrowly won by a margin of 35 votes—securing 78,542 votes to Opendi’s 78,507.

Election Controversy and Allegations of Vote Manipulation

Opendi, alleging discrepancies in the election process, had requested a recount in several polling stations, including locations in Ramogi Parish and Abwal. However, the court discovered that some ballot boxes showed signs of tampering, including broken seals and physical alterations, which compromised the recount process.

Despite presenting evidence of alleged irregularities, Opendi’s application was denied, and the court confirmed Akoth as the duly elected representative for Tororo. Opendi, not entirely surprised by the outcome, continued to claim that the election had been manipulated. She accused the NRM’s electoral officials, including Dr. Tanga Odoi, of being involved in ballot stuffing and alleged that her defeat was orchestrated with security assistance.

Akoth’s Victory and Future Plans

Angella Akoth, reacting to the court’s decision, expressed gratitude and called the ruling a victory for the people of Tororo. She vowed to continue her political journey, addressing the challenges in her community while also urging her opponent, Opendi, to consider retiring from politics.
