Rwanda has received the first group of migrants deported from the United States under a new bilateral agreement. Government spokesperson Yolande Makolo confirmed on Thursday that seven people arrived in Kigali in mid-August as part of the Rwanda US deportation deal.

Makolo explained that three of the deportees asked to return to their home countries, while four chose to stay in Rwanda. “Regardless of their needs, the government will provide support and protection,” she said.

The arrivals followed the agreement signed earlier this month, which allows Rwanda to take in up to 250 migrants. In early August, the U.S. shared an initial list of 10 individuals for vetting. In addition, Rwanda promised to provide healthcare, accommodation, and job training for those accepted.

The U.S. State Department avoided commenting on diplomatic details but stressed its priorities. A spokesperson said, “Implementing the Trump Administration’s immigration policies is a top priority. We remain unwavering in our commitment to end illegal and mass migration and strengthen America’s border security.”

Immigration hardliners argue that third-country deportations quickly remove offenders, including those with criminal records. They see Rwanda’s cooperation as essential in managing such cases. However, critics describe the policy as dangerous, claiming migrants risk isolation in countries where they lack language skills, ties, and safety.

Rwanda has positioned itself as a partner for Western governments seeking alternatives for migrants. Rights groups, though, continue to question its human rights record. They warn that deportees may face new risks despite official assurances.

Makolo noted that the migrants traveled with an international organization and are now receiving care from the International Organization for Migration and Rwandan social services. Consequently, authorities say they are working to help the new arrivals integrate or safely return home.

The Rwanda US deportation deal forms part of President Donald Trump’s broader crackdown on immigration. His administration claims the policy deters unlawful migration, while critics argue it prioritizes politics over human dignity.

The arrival of the first seven migrants under the Rwanda US deportation deal shows both Washington’s tough stance on immigration and Kigali’s growing role as a host for deportees. The debate over rights, safety, and political motives will likely intensify as more groups arrive in the coming months.
