Rwanda Formula 1 Ambitions Accelerate
Rwanda’s Formula 1 aspirations gained a high-profile boost as President Paul Kagame attended the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at Baku’s Formula 1 street circuit. The visit highlights Kigali’s strategic plan to host Africa’s next F1 race, potentially becoming the continent’s second-ever Grand Prix since South Africa in 1993.
The initiative envisions constructing a permanent circuit near the upcoming Bugesera International Airport. Kagame emphasized Rwanda’s “seriousness and commitment” to bringing the global motorsport spectacle to the region, underscoring the nation’s growing role in international sporting events.
FIA and International Support
Discussions with F1 president Stefano Domenicali were held in September to review Rwanda’s proposal. The possible exit of the Dutch Grand Prix after 2026 opens the calendar for a 2027 debut in Rwanda. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, set to join Ferrari next season, described Rwanda as one of his favorite destinations, further energizing the campaign.
The recent hosting of the FIA General Assembly in Kigali—the first in Africa—showcased Rwanda’s dedication to motorsport infrastructure. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem praised the country’s collaborative approach and commitment to advancing the sport across the continent.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
During the trip, Kagame and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed agreements spanning agriculture, education, air services, trade, and public service delivery. Rwanda aims to replicate Azerbaijan’s advanced public service system, demonstrating how the F1 project aligns with broader national development and tourism strategies.
If successful, the Rwanda Formula 1 project promises significant boosts in tourism, investment, and infrastructure, placing East Africa on the global motorsport map for the first time.
