Adjumani Town, – The residents of Adjumani Town have raised serious concerns regarding the quality of a road constructed under the prestigious World Bank-funded Uganda Support for Municipal Infrastructure Development – Additional Funding (USMID-AF) program. Many residents are expressing disappointment and frustration over what they perceive as shoddy work on the road project, highlighting potential safety hazards and wasted resources.
The USMID-AF programme, aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure in various municipalities across Uganda, has been lauded for its potential to uplift local communities. However, the road construction in Adjumani Town has sparked controversy due to the alleged substandard workmanship and materials used.
Numerous residents, who had eagerly anticipated the completion of the road, now find themselves grappling with disillusionment as they witness cracks and uneven surfaces emerge on what was meant to be a vital artery for the town. In interviews with concerned citizens, a recurring theme is the fear that the road’s poor condition could lead to accidents and injuries.
One resident, Mary Akello, voiced her concerns, stating, “We were initially excited about the road project as it was expected to improve transportation and the overall look of our town. But now, it’s disheartening to see the road deteriorate so quickly. We worry about accidents, especially during the rainy season when the road becomes slippery.”
Local authorities have acknowledged the residents’ grievances and are launching an investigation into the alleged poor quality of construction. The Adjumani Municipal Council, responsible for overseeing the implementation of the USMID-AF project in the area, has assured the community that they will take decisive action to address the situation.
“We share the concerns of our residents, and we take the quality of this project seriously,” stated the Mayor of Adjumani Town, John Ocheng. “We are committed to conducting a thorough assessment of the road’s condition and will work closely with relevant stakeholders to rectify any substandard work that may have been done.”
The Uganda Support for Municipal Infrastructure Development – Additional Funding (USMID-AF) programme has been instrumental in transforming several municipalities across the country, contributing to improved infrastructure, enhanced urban services, and increased economic opportunities. However, the current situation in Adjumani Town serves as a reminder that rigorous oversight and quality control are essential to ensure that the benefits of such projects are sustained over time.
