KAMPALA, UGANDA | Micheal Katumba, a former employee of Nabugabo Updeal Joint Venture and an outspoken supporter of Uganda’s National Unity Platform (NUP), has become the emblematic face of the struggle for political freedom in Uganda. In a series of incidents that seem to be drawn from the most harrowing political thrillers, Katumba has faced what appears to be state-sanctioned persecution for his political beliefs.

In early 2021, following his active role as a polling agent in the contentious elections that saw President Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, challenge the incumbent government, Katumba was forcibly taken from home. Eyewitness accounts describe him being blindfolded and pushed into a vehicle by men in plain clothes. This was the beginning of a six-day nightmare at “Nalufenya,” a location that has become synonymous with allegations of government torture. Photographic evidence provided by Katumba reveals the extent of the physical abuse he endured, showing deep, untreated wounds that speak to the severity of his ordeal.

Despite the trauma, Katumba’s resolve did not waver. His subsequent termination from Nabugabo Updeal Joint Venture under the pretext of company downsizing, which many believe was politically motivated, only strengthened his determination to fight for democratic change.

However, his continued involvement with the NUP would lead to another arrest in early 2022, this time leading to charges of inciting public violence. The arrest took place at his home in Nansana, a suburb of Kampala, with neighbors reporting a heavy police and military presence. Katumba’s detainment at Kawempe police station and the subsequent transfer to an undisclosed detention facility marked another dark chapter in his life, where he was subjected to further torture. His arrests and subjection to torture continued on several occasions as more arrests were made in December 2022 and July 2023.

Some of Micheal’s wounds sustained from his alleged torture by state operatives.

The international community has been alerted to Katumba’s plight, raising concerns about the state of democracy and human rights in Uganda. As Katumba recovers from his injuries and the psychological scars of his experiences, his story has become a rallying cry for activists and human rights defenders across the globe.
