The PDM farming success of Ms. Nampa Harriet has impressed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. During his visit to Mangaliba village in Mukono District, he praised her for turning a modest UGX 500,000 grant into a profitable farming enterprise.

Ms. Nampa, a mother of four, shared her story with the President. She used UGX 300,000 to buy three pigs and UGX 200,000 for feed. Within eight months, the pigs produced 27 piglets. She sold 25 for UGX 100,000 each, earning UGX 2.5 million.

She saved UGX 1 million with her father and spent UGX 1.5 million on more feed. The next cycle brought another UGX 2.5 million in piglet sales. With her profits, she bought a dairy cow. The cow now produces seven liters of milk per day. Her family consumes two, and she sells the remaining five for UGX 10,000 daily.

Initially, Ms. Nampa declined the full UGX 1 million under the PDM. She feared managing a large amount. But her success shows how planning and discipline can turn even small capital into something impactful.

She thanked President Museveni for thinking about low-income families. According to her, those who say UGX 1 million is too little simply don’t know how to use it wisely.

President Museveni applauded her story. He said the PDM farming success shows how small-scale efforts, when well managed, can bring major change. He emphasized that PDM builds on earlier initiatives like Entandikwa and NAADS but is more empowering because it sends money directly to the people.

The President reminded everyone that the model reflects the 1996 NRM manifesto’s “four-acre plan.” This included coffee, fruits, pasture, food crops, and backyard piggery or poultry. What makes PDM unique is the direct financial access for farmers.

To support Ms. Nampa further, the President pledged to buy her one acre of land worth UGX 60 million. He also promised a tuk-tuk valued at UGX 12 million and a borehole for her village. Each of the 10 other PDM beneficiaries at the meeting received UGX 1 million.

The PDM farming success isn’t limited to Mukono. Across Kayunga, Buikwe, and Buvuma, similar stories are emerging. So far, UGX 67.7 billion of the UGX 70.1 billion allocated to Greater Mukono has reached all 273 PDM SACCOs.

Additionally, each SACCO received another UGX 50 million in the second tranche for the 2024/25 financial year. These resources continue to uplift lives at the grassroots.

Ms. Nampa’s journey is a powerful reminder that change begins with action. Her story inspires others to see opportunity in every challenge and make the most of what they have.
