King Charles Postpones Vatican Visit Amid Pope’s Health Concerns

King Charles and Queen Camilla have postponed their anticipated visit to the Vatican following medical advice for Pope Francis to rest due to ongoing health complications. The decision was made “by mutual agreement,” Buckingham Palace confirmed in a statement on Tuesday.

While the Papal leg of the tour has been shelved, the broader state visit to Italy will continue in April with some program modifications.

“Their Majesties send The Pope their best wishes for his convalescence and look forward to visiting him in The Holy See, once he has recovered,” the palace said.

A Historic Opportunity Delayed

The Vatican visit was to be a key highlight of the royal tour, billed as a historic gesture of goodwill between the Church of England—of which King Charles is the Supreme Governor—and the Roman Catholic Church. The timing held special significance as this year marks the Papal Jubilee, an event celebrated by Catholics once every 25 years.

An audience with Pope Francis and a special service at the Sistine Chapel were among the anticipated events that will now be rescheduled.

Pope’s Fragile Health

Pope Francis, 88, has been recovering from a recent hospitalization in Rome due to pneumonia in both lungs. The Vatican later revealed that his condition had become “critical,” as he also developed kidney complications. Known to be vulnerable to respiratory infections after a partial lung removal in his youth, the Pope’s condition has drawn global concern and prayers.

He made a brief public appearance over the weekend—his first since being discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

Italy Visit Continues

Despite the Vatican setback, King Charles’s Italian visit remains largely intact. He is expected to meet with Italy’s President and Prime Minister, becoming the first British monarch to address both houses of the Italian parliament. A state banquet and cultural engagements are also on the agenda.

The visit also coincides with another milestone: King Charles and Queen Camilla will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary while in Italy.

Looking Ahead

While royal sources had initially expressed optimism about the Pope’s participation, his medical team advised otherwise. Buckingham Palace remains hopeful the Vatican visit can be rescheduled once the pontiff has fully recovered.

This state trip marks the first official overseas visit of the year for King Charles and Queen Camilla, and though slightly altered, it still reflects the deep diplomatic and spiritual ties between the UK and Italy.
