Mengo, Uganda — On July 31, 2025, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II marked the 32nd anniversary of his coronation as the King of Buganda, urging his subjects to remain vigilant and united. In a pre-recorded message broadcast to the kingdom, Kabaka Mutebi celebrated the accomplishments of the Baganda people while warning against individuals attempting to undermine the Kingdom of Buganda through political and legal manipulation.

A Legacy of Resilience and Loyalty

The Kabaka expressed heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support and loyalty of the Baganda, both within Uganda and abroad. Despite numerous socio-political and economic challenges, Kabaka Mutebi praised the kingdom’s resilience, recognizing their efforts to uphold the dignity of the throne since his coronation in 1993, which marked the restoration of the Buganda monarchy after decades of abolition under the regime of President Milton Obote.

“We are proud of all Baganda—whether in villages, towns, counties, or abroad—for standing firm to protect the dignity of the throne,” Kabaka Mutebi stated. “You have been courageous and consistent in supporting the kingdom. Please, do not give up.”

Land Reforms and Legal Challenges

In his address, the Kabaka alluded to the recent legal and political challenges surrounding Buganda’s cultural and land rights, particularly regarding the mailo land tenure system. The central government has proposed reforms that critics argue could erode the kingdom’s historical authority and property rights. Kabaka Mutebi strongly cautioned against individuals who, under the guise of legal pretense, were working to destabilize the kingdom and its rich heritage.

“We have seen them many times—those who disguise under false legal claims to weaken the kingdom. Avoid such people,” he warned. “Do not be swayed by those who make it a habit to manipulate the law to attack our traditions.”

Embracing Unity for Political Stability

As Uganda approaches the 2026 general elections, Kabaka Mutebi emphasized the importance of unity within Buganda. He warned that political seasons often open opportunities for detractors to exploit divisions within the kingdom. He called on his people to be vigilant and to scrutinize the character of those seeking political office, stressing the need for unity in the face of political manipulation.

“This political season is one of the avenues our enemies use. I urge you to be alert and to scrutinize the character of those around you,” he said.

Self-Reliance and Economic Transformation

In addition to urging political unity, Kabaka Mutebi called for greater self-reliance among his subjects. He emphasized the importance of taking charge of socio-economic transformation, rather than depending on external aid or handouts.

“As always, I encourage you to work hard and be self-reliant, instead of crying out or waiting for handouts from those who only offer peanuts,” he stated.

A Kingdom of Faith and Prosperity

The Kabaka closed his address by reaffirming the importance of faith, unity, and self-reliance for the prosperity of Buganda Kingdom. He extended gratitude to all partners and allies, both within Uganda and internationally, for their support toward the kingdom’s development efforts in health, education, and cultural preservation.

“May God guide us through these times,” Kabaka Mutebi concluded, reinforcing his vision of a prosperous and unified Buganda.

A Glimpse into the Future

As Buganda Kingdom continues to navigate political and legal challenges, Kabaka Mutebi’s leadership remains a beacon of unity and resilience. His call for vigilance against saboteurs and emphasis on self-reliance will continue to shape the kingdom’s approach to the challenges of the present and the future. With a deep commitment to preserving its cultural heritage and advancing the welfare of his people, Kabaka Mutebi’s leadership stands as a symbol of strength in an ever-changing political landscape.
