In a major shakeup, FDC backs Nandala Mafabi as its presidential candidate for the 2026 election. The decision followed intense talks within the party. Elders from FDC met party president Patrick Amuriat and convinced him to step aside.
A senior insider confirmed the news on Monday night. “It’s true, FDC backs Nandala and he will be unveiled today,” the source said. An emergency press briefing is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Nathan Nandala Mafabi serves as the party’s secretary general. He will now lead the Forum for Democratic Change into a tough presidential race. He joins other contenders including President Museveni of the NRM, Robert Kyagulanyi of NUP, and Mugisha Muntu of the ANT.
During a recent meeting in Mbale, elders from Teso and Bugisu asked Amuriat to give way. They believed that Nandala could unite the party and energize the base. Amuriat agreed without resistance.
FDC spokesperson John Kikonyogo noted that the party sought unity. According to him, leaders had worked behind the scenes to resolve internal divisions. The announcement ends weeks of speculation over the party’s top candidate.
The decision gives FDC a fresh start. Nandala has built a strong record in Parliament and commands respect within opposition circles. His selection signals a shift in how the party wants to engage voters.
By stepping down, Amuriat shows loyalty to the party’s broader mission. His exit reflects growing influence from senior voices urging strategic leadership choices.
