China has staged a massive China military parade featuring advanced missiles, drones, and robotic systems. The show signaled Beijing’s determination to rival the United States and its allies.

President Xi Jinping hosted over 20 world leaders, including Russia’s Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un. The event doubled as a display of power and a diplomatic statement.

The parade revealed five key takeaways about China’s military ambitions:

1. Deployment of advanced weapons
China now produces a wide range of weapons quickly. A decade ago, its systems often looked like crude copies of US designs. Today, the arsenal includes drones and missiles that appear more innovative. Analysts say China’s defence industry has matured. Still, experts question whether such a large, untested military can use these platforms effectively.

2. Heavy focus on missiles
Beijing displayed new missile variants such as the Dongfeng-61 and the “Guam Killer” Dongfeng-26D. It also rolled out hypersonic anti-ship missiles like the YJ-17 and YJ-19. These weapons reflect China’s deterrence strategy and its push to counter US naval dominance. Some Western experts warn that US carrier groups could become “sitting ducks” against such missile strikes.

3. AI and drones at the center
China presented AI-driven systems including the AJX-002 submarine drone and the GJ-11 stealth attack drone, known as the “loyal wingman.” It also revealed robotic wolves designed for reconnaissance, mine clearing, and battlefield support. Analysts say Beijing has studied the Ukraine war, where drones overwhelmed defences. They argue that China intends to replace traditional structures with AI-driven capabilities.

4. US still has the edge
China is catching up in technology, but the US maintains an operational advantage. American forces rely on bottom-up decision-making, which creates battlefield agility. In contrast, China’s top-down system may slow responses. Experts point to incidents, such as a Chinese warship ramming its own vessel last month, as proof of operational weaknesses.

5. A global sales pitch and a united front
The parade was also a showcase for Chinese weapons exports. Countries like Myanmar already buy Chinese arms, and new clients may follow. Xi appeared alongside Putin and Kim, sending a clear message of unity. Analysts say this warns Washington that conflict with China could also mean facing Russia and North Korea at the same time.

Ultimately, the China military parade demonstrated Beijing’s strategy of blending advanced technology with diplomacy and arms sales. It was both a show of strength and a reminder that China aims to challenge US global dominance.
