Presidential hopeful Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine has said that if President Yoweri Museveni had any regard for God, places of worship would not be closed for prayers yet open for political activities.
Places of worship were among the first activities to be closed in March by President Museveni as one of the measures to combat the spread of the Coronavirus.
Despite easing some of the measures that were initially put in place to limit the spread of the Coronavirus, places of worship remain closed for communal prayers.
In what he termed as his response to President Museveni, Kyagulanyi said the continued closure of places of worship is a complete disregard for God and that the President is using the closure to keep members of the opposition under lockdown.
Kyagulanyi said, “Without digressing, my point is that if you had regard for God, places of worship would not be closed for prayers yet open for NRM political rallies and assemblies. Those are houses of God.”
President Museveni in his recent public addresses has always noted out that places of worship should find a way that they can operate while maintaining Ministry of Health’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) before they can be allowed to open.
Last week, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) held its primaries to vote candidates who will hold the parties flag in the forthcoming 2021 general election and voters lined up behind their candidates, with disregard to the social distancing requirements of the health ministry.
Kyagulanyi said that these are double standards on the side of President Museveni.
“Hundreds of people were gathered in large numbers under the watch of police and the millitary. And somehow, you have conveniently refused to open places of worship under the pretext that they would spread Covid-19. These double standards are for world cup, as we the young people say,” Kyagulanyi said.
Kyagulanyi said that the reason why the President is still hesitant to open places of worship, according to him, is because government will then be put on a spot as they will not have another excuse for blocking opposition activities.
He said, “You are refusing to open these places of worship in order to keep opposition leaders under lockdown. True to your character, we may even now see a stringent enforcement of Covid-19 regulations, now that NRM has finished its primaries.”
Recently, President Museveni called religious leaders at State House in Entebbe to pray against Covid-19, but the Kyadondo East legislator called this a ‘public stunt’ aimed at achieving political mileage.
The lawmaker said that the solution to Covid-19 does not lie in such prayer sessions but it lies in justice, truth and righteousness, because that is what God wants, according to Kyagulanyi.
President Museveni, in his missive last month lashed out at Kyagulanyi and Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake against using Covid-19 to fight their political battles.
The President pledged to ‘crush’ such people, who are enemies of Uganda.
